Barrel Sauna Guide: How to Enjoy Your Private Sauna
THE FOREST SAUNA features an authentic Finnish HARVIA barrel sauna. In the privacy of your rental villa, enjoy the sauna at your own pace, as long as you like. This guide covers how to use the sauna, the "totonoi" cycle, the natural water bath, and what to bring.
About the HARVIA Barrel Sauna
A barrel sauna is a barrel-shaped sauna. The round design circulates heat efficiently for even warmth throughout. Our HARVIA sauna (made in Finland) blends naturally into the forest setting. An open window lets you enjoy the forest view while inside.
Fits up to 4 adults. Temperature adjustable from 80-100°C.
The "Totonoi" Cycle
"Totonoi" is the deep relaxation that comes from the sauna→cold bath→outdoor rest cycle.
[Step 1: Sauna] Enter the barrel sauna for 10-15 minutes. Start shorter and extend as you get comfortable. Pour water on the sauna stones (löyly) to create steam and boost the heat.
[Step 2: Cold Bath] Step into the natural water bath on the deck. The initial cold sensation fades in 30-60 seconds. Leave when it feels right—don't push it.
[Step 3: Outdoor Rest] Recline on the infinity chair, close your eyes, breathe deeply. This is the highlight—the "totonoi" moment. Feel warmth returning, clarity in your mind, deep relaxation. The forest breeze, birdsong, and dappled sunlight complete the experience.
Repeat 2-3 times for the full experience. It's your private sauna—go at your own pace.
The Natural Water Bath
Our water bath uses natural spring water from the mountains—softer and more mineral-rich. The open-air deck setting lets you gaze at the sky while cooling down.
Best in summer; in winter, use the indoor bath with cold water instead.
*The deck water bath is closed Nov-Apr to prevent freezing. Fill the indoor bath with cold water as an alternative.
How to Operate the Sauna
Operating the sauna is simple. Detailed instructions are provided at check-in.
1. Turn on the sauna heater 2. Set your preferred temperature (80-90°C recommended) 3. Wait 30-40 minutes to reach temperature 4. Water and ladle for löyly are inside the sauna 5. Turn off the heater after use
A timer and thermometer are installed inside.
