December-February is snow season. The 650-1,300m highlands see more snow and ice than the city. Snow roads continue into early March. If you are not used to snow driving, we recommend visiting from mid-March onward. Snow and sauna contrast, quiet forest, starry skies—winter in Kitakaruizawa offers a unique escape.

Winter sauna highlights the contrast between warm interior and cold snow. Warm up in the HARVIA barrel sauna, then step onto the deck for cold-air cooling—a winter-only totonoi.
*The deck water bath is closed Nov-Apr due to freezing. Use the indoor bath instead. Heating is provided for a warm stay.
What to Wear & Bring
Warm layers are essential. Dress warmly for outdoor cooling. Towels, toothbrush, and other amenities are provided. For the car: studless tires are mandatory. Tire chains, de-icer spray, warm clothes, and emergency food are recommended.

Studless tires are mandatory. Snow and ice occur Nov-Apr. Four-wheel drive is recommended. Route: about 60 min from Joshinetsu Expressway "Usui-Karuizawa IC" via Route 146. Some sections may close in heavy snow. Always check road conditions (Gunma/Nagano prefecture sites, NEXCO) before departure. Watch for ice from nighttime radiation cooling. Be cautious when temps are below 3°C. If you are not experienced with snow driving, avoid visiting before early March. Roads clear from mid-March.
Nearby Winter Spots
Several ski resorts near Karuizawa and Tsumagoi. Combine sauna with skiing for a full day. Snow-covered Mt. Asama and quiet forest make for scenic drives. Indoors: enjoy movies on the projector, cook in the kitchen, or relax in the warm villa.
